Sermon, January 25, 2009, Revelation 12.1-2 The Woman

Revelation 12.1-2 The Woman

Chapter 12 gives the story that lies behind the story of human history: cosmic war.

Included in this chapter is a vision of what God Himself thinks of His Church.

A. WHO IS THIS WOMAN?

1. Eve? [Gen 3.13ff]]

2. Israel? [Psa 45; Isa 62.5]

3. Mary? [Mat 1.21]

4. The Church? [Eph 5.22-33]

5. All of the above?

B. WHAT DO WE KNOW OF HER?

1. She reflects the glory of Christ: clothed with the sun

2. She is given dominion: the moon under her feet

3. She is victorious: wearing a crown

4. She is full of promise and hope: ready to give birth

C. WHAT SHOULD WE THEN THINK and HOW SHOULD WE THEN LIVE?

1. God loves the church

2. God sees the church as all glorious

3. God sees the church engaged in a glorious task

a. Shine the light of Christ into this world [1.20]

b. Worship God [4.9-10]

c. Persevere to the very end [6.10-11]

d. Keep marching forward [7.4]

Quotes of note...

Jesus Christ can so interfere in a human life that it can look up and say, "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits," even in the midst of sorrow or suffering.
