    1. Abandoned by God? [1-5]

    • b. Others find help, but not you [4-5]

    2. Despised by people? [6-10]

    • a. Feeling like a worm
    • b. Your faith laughed at

    3. Surrounded by trouble? [11-18]

    • a. Fear [14]
    • b. Everything is gone! [18]
    • c. You feel trapped and hounded

B. A PICTURE OF THE CROSS

    1. Abandoned: My God, My God, why have You forsaken me?

    • a. He descended into hell
    • b. He paid a greater and more excellent price in suffering in His soul the terrible torments of a condemned and forsaken man [Calvin].

    2. Despised: Why don’t you save yourself?

    3. Surrounded: bulls, lions, dogs

QUESTIONS: [ O Sacred Head, now wounded ]

    1. Do I rejoice to call this Suffering Savior mine?
    …though despised and gory, I joy to call Thee mine.

    2. Do I see His suffering as something endured for me?
    …mine, mine was the transgression, but Thine the deadly pain.

    3. Do I daily thank Jesus for His sufferings?
    What language shall I borrow to thank Thee, dearest Friend,
    For this Thy dying sorrow, Thy pity without end?
