Sermon March 25, 2007

Hebrews 4.16 Let Us Draw Near With Confidence

    1. Grace is what we need.

    2. Grace is what God has for us at His throne.

    3. Faith is the means by which we draw near to God’s throne.

    4. The means of grace are the tools our faith uses to grasp God’s grace:

    • Word, sacraments, prayer, fellowship, praise and worship, humble submission to God’s work.

    5. Who Jesus is and what He’s done for us makes all of this possible.

A. WHO IS TO DRAW NEAR?

    1. All should

    2. Some will not:

      • Total Depravity: Romans 8.5-8

    3. Some will:

      a. Those whom God chooses:

      • Unconditional Election: John 6.37
      b. Those for whom Christ died

      • Particular Redemption: John 10.11, 14-15

      c. Those whom the Spirit calls

      • Effectual Calling: John 6.44
      • Regeneration: John 3.3-8

      d. Those justified and sanctified: 1 Corinthians 6.11

    B. HOW ARE WE TO DRAW NEAR?

      1. We CAN draw near [Heb 4.14-15]
      2. We can now draw near with confidence, full assurance of faith [Heb 10.22]

        a. We can come at any time

        b. We can keep coming back

        c. We can be honest when we come

    C. WHAT WILL WE FIND WHEN WE DO DRAW NEAR?

      1. Mercy

      2. Grace to help in time of need

      • a. In life
      • b. In death

Quotes of note...

How often we look upon God as our last and feeblest resource! We go to him because we have nowhere else to go. And then we learn that the storms of life have driven us, not upon the rocks, but into the desired haven.
