Sermon December 31, 2006

Hebrews 3 Following Jesus Into A New Year

The greatest challenge that we face as we enter the year 2007
is to hold fast our profession of faith in Christ.

A. THINK ABOUT JESUS AS ONE WHO’S ABLE TO LEAD US [1-6]

1. Think about Jesus [1]

a. The Apostle of our confession

b. The High Priest of our confession

2. Think about Jesus who is like Moses [2]

a. A leader

b. A faithful leader

3. Think about Jesus who is better than Moses [3-6]

B. THINK ABOUT WHAT IT WOULD MEAN NOT TO FOLLOW JESUS [7-11]

1. God did wonderful things through Moses

2. God has done much more wonderful things through Jesus

C. THINK ABOUT WHAT WE NEED TO DO [12-19]

1. The danger that we face: falling away from the living God [12]

2. How the danger takes root in our lives: becoming callous toward
the
truth [13]

3. The solution to this problem: hold fast to your profession as a
Christian [14]

4. How to hold fast and remain faithful:

a. Consider Jesus [1]

b. Encourage one another [13]

5. A closing word of caution:

a. I need to do more than just hear God’s Word [16a]

b. I need to do more than just join with the people of God
[16b]

c. This is a matter of spiritual life and death [17]

d. I need to trust and obey [18-19]

Quotes of note...

O Lord our God, grant us grace to desire Thee with our whole heart; that, so desiring, we may seek, and seeking find Thee; and so finding Thee may love Thee; and loving Thee, may hate those sins from which Thou hast redeemed us.
St. Anselm
